Health Plus Optometry as an Approved Teaching Site

Since 1992, we have had numerous Optometry interns working with us during their third and fourth year practical internship rotation. In 2001, Health Plus Optometry became the first Canadian site to be approved to provide ocular medical therapy practicum for final year optometry students. We now have a continuous flow of Clinical interns that work closely with our Doctors to provide eye exams for our patients. To ensure that the patient receives the highest quality examination, all procedures and services provided by the interns are assessed and reviewed with the doctor and the patient. In many cases, the intern is able to help us provide an enhanced service that more complex patients require, but would be otherwise difficult to provide all in one appointment time. Once again, we are proud to be able to offer this unique service to our patients in sharing our care for you with our emerging student doctors.

Charity Vision Care Projects

Our doctors donate their time to provide vision care to the needy in underdeveloped countries. They work with other doctors, nurses and surgeons that are members or the Alberta based charity organization, Canadian Vision Care (CVC). CVC’s main project takes place in Jamaica every November. Other countries that have been visited include St. Jucia, Dominica, Trinidad, Guyana, Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico. When the Eyecare team does a charity project, they assess for the need of glasses, for eye disease and for need of eye surgery. Then treatment services are arranged by the charity team and coordinated by the local Lions club. The Lion’s clubs of all of the countries that CVC has worked in are instrumental in preparing the clinic locations, local volunteers, and accommodations for our CVC doctors and volunteers traveling from Canada. When a need for glasses is found, the patient is fit from a selection of new glasses, and the prescription made in Canada, also by donated time and products, then shipped back to Jamaica to be distributed to the patient again by the Lions. Back at home, our doctors also are involved in many fund raising initiatives, such as golf tournaments and casinos, to raise funds to pay for glasses and equipment for the charity projects. In sharp contrast to the conditions in Jamaica and other underdeveloped countries, we have so much I Canada that we take for granted. It is wonderful to be involved and to be able to make a difference.
